Gareth Hughes

Dr. Gareth Hughes is a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur with 30 years experiencev developing medical technologies. In 1998, Gareth became the first full-time employee of MedCam, Inc., a startup company developing miniature optics for retinal scanning devices and endoscopes. Since working at MedCam, Gareth has continued efforts within the startup realm having helped start several companies including Computer Optical Systems (a micro-optics company), Medical Nanotechnologies (one of the first cancer nanomedicine companies), and Xanapath (a cancer diagnostics company). In 2012, Dr. Hughes launched Caizio, a company that helps medtech and biotech startups with early stage product development and has helped bring in US$30 million in early-stage funding. In 2015, he and his wife launched The GLITCH & Co, a custom apparel company that designs and prints garments and other goods for schools, small businesses, and non-profits. In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Gareth was a business advisor for the Prisoner Entrepreneurship Program to help those incarcerated to start up a business and has participated in numerous workshops and review panels run by the US Dept. of Defense, National Institutes of Standards and Technology, National Science Foundation, and the National Academies. Keeping with his Welsh roots, he is on the leadership team at GlobalWelsh USA focused on helping Welsh medtech and biotech startups navigate the US healthcare market. Gareth has a Chemical Engineering degree from University of Cincinnati, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Minnesota and an MBA in Entrepreneurship from University of Dallas.
